This is Oscar, the newest addition to Bonisla. As you've probably noticed he isn't a black and white Springer! Nope, he is in fact a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, many thanks to Neil and Liz for letting us have this special little man. Born on the 19th of May he joined us at 7 weeks of age and will one day hopefully be a successful gundog....
Oscar is such a sweet boy, loves his family like no other dog I've come across and so intelligent. Outside of the home he can be a little nervous and unsure of strange surroundings, he's certainly no fan of strangers - inspite of many people taking a fancy to him! I've spent a lot of time trying to desensitise Oscar to situations he's uncomfortable with, as when he feels unsure of something he tends to shout and loudly! Although those that know him know he is anything but aggressive, a large dog shouting at them is not something most people are willing to tolerate these days. As a result of this training and him mentally maturing (I hope!) he now copes a lot better with strangers etc and has come on in leaps and bounds lately.
Showing is not something Oscar enjoys anymore. Although he copes much better in unusual surroundings, he simply doesn't like being handled by strangers. After some rather rough treatment by a judge at a local Champ show, which resulted in Oscar becoming noticably scared, I decided to give up on the showing - no point in showing him if he hates it! Oscar continues to come along to shows with Rossi, but is now purely a mascot!
The working side is where Oscar excels - what a dog! At the age of 15 months he hunts, points and retrieves like a pro. I will continue his training in the hope of doing some Pointing Tests with him next Spring. In the long run Working Tests might be something to consider, but this all depends on his confidence!
All in all I love this dog to bits and he continues to astound me with his intelligence every single day.
